Easy Beginners Quilting Patterns

Looking for some good beginners quilting patterns? You've come to the right place. I used the books below to teach myself how to quilt. They are easy-to-understand, loaded with pictures and make beautiful quilts.

Quilt in a Day for the Absolute Beginner

My favorite quilt book is Make a Quilt in a Day Log Cabin Pattern by Eleanor Burns. I must confess, though, I am biased. I used it to complete my very, first quilt.

Quilt in a Day books tell you everything you need to finish your first quilt. I mean everything. And there are pictures of basic quilting supplies just in case you are not familiar with them.

In fact, you can walk into a quilt shop with this book and walk out with everything you need to make your fist quilt.

Now, can you actually finish a quilt in a day? Hmmm... As beginner, I doubt it. You can, however finish your first quilt in a weekend.

Unlike other books, this book does not have several beginners quilting patterns - only one . Working through the one pattern did give me that I-can-do-it confidence to finish my first quilt.

It can do the same for you.

Sample Quilting with Alex Anderson

If you want a taste of basic, beginners quilting patterns, Alex Anderson's book Start Quilting is the way to go. This book contains six different patterns.

By working through Start Quilting, you will learn how to strip-piece square and how to make half-square triangles. These skills can take you a long way in quilting.

In fact, you could really not learn any more piecing skills than presented in this book and be just fine. I worked quilt tops made from squares for years.

Although Log Cabin was my first completed quilt, I used this book for my first quilt top - a rail fence pattern that I donated to charity.

What is different about this book is that there's a section on fabric selection. The book contains hints on values of fabric and what makes a quilt interesting. In fact, you can learn a lot about fabric selection by just looking at the pictures.

I see this as a second purchase. The Log Cabin Quilt in a Day book has more pictures. For beginners, I like pictures.

Quick and Cute Baby Quilt Patterns

Baby quilt patterns are a good way of breaking into quilting. You can whip one up in a weekend. They provide a unique gift. And let's get honest - they are cute as all get out.

My favorite baby quilt pattern book is Quilts for Baby - Easy as ABC by Ursula Reikes. You'll learn to make the fabric do most of the work.

If you have a fabric phobia, another good point about this book is that most of these patterns require a minimum of different fabrics. Choose your border fabric first and you'll be in good shape.
